One Fifth, the newest restaurant from Chef and Owner Marc Forgione's Respect Hospitality, debuted in the Summer 2022 on the corner of 5th Avenue and East 8th Street in Greenwich Village.
Restaurants at this address over the years have been in near-continuous operation since 1927. One Fifth pays homage to its former tenants and serve as a welcoming and convivial living room for the neighborhood.
The menu consists of a bounty of Italian small plates, house made pastas, Roman inspired pizza, and a rotating selection of seasonal vegetables from the Union Square Green Market, designed for a festive shareable meal regardless of the time of day.
History
One Fifth Avenue is an address rich with history, with the restaurant in near-continuous operation since 1927.
At the end of WWII as the homecoming parade of troops marched down Fifth Ave. patrons of the Number One Bar toasted with Martinis on the sidewalk.
In Early 70’s restaurateur Patricia Murphy, opened a branch of her namesake “Candlelight Restaurant” in the premises.
For decades, the first floor of One Fifth has housed a restaurant. In the ’30s, there was the supper club #1 Bar that launched the careers of Dorothy Lamour and Paul Lynde. By 1976, George Schwarz and his wife, Kiki Kogelnik, opened One Fifth, where brothers Keith and Brian McNally’s worked before they went on to open the Odeon.
Throughout the ’90s, Alfred Portale, the celebrated chef of Gotham Bar & Grill, tried his hand at a seafood restaurant, named One Fifth Avenue, in 1992. That was later followed by Vince and Linda, where Anthony Bourdain ran the kitchen. Otto Enoteca e Pizzeria in came in 2003 and was a mainstay for the neighborhood for close to 20 years before closing as a result of the pandemic.
Menu
The food at One Fifth draws influence from Chef Marc’s Italian-American family with the menu paying respect to both Italian tradition and New York’s surroundings, including a focus on local ingredients from the Union Square Greenmarket. The menu was created by Marc Forgione with his executive chef for One Fifth, Robert Zwirz.
